In September 2026, Castelo de Vide launches a new route connecting nine municipal and privately run museums, designed for either a day visit or a weekend.

The essentials

The route is launched at 16:00 on Friday, 18 September, with the opening of the exhibition “Nine Months, Nine Museums – A Monthly Itinerary” in the Town Hall atrium. On 27 September, Maria do Carmo Fernandes leads the guided visit “A Look at Museum Heritage”, for which registration at the Tourist Office is required. The national listing gives a 09:30–17:00 window; the exact tour time is Being updated. For an independent visit, check each venue in advance: the Megalithism exhibition at Póvoa e Meadas Museum requires advance booking and a group of at least 10 people.

Launch and exhibition on 18 September

The public presentation takes place at 16:00 in the Town Hall atrium, together with the opening of the exhibition “Nine Months, Nine Museums – A Monthly Itinerary”. The exhibition remains there until 27 September as part of the European Heritage Days.

The new route connects nine municipal and privately run museums. It was developed through a partnership between Castelo de Vide Municipality, the Grupo de Amigos de Castelo de Vide and the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre.

Guided visit on 27 September

The World Tourism Day activity, “A Look at Museum Heritage”, is led by municipal heritage specialist Maria do Carmo Fernandes. Registration at the Tourist Office is required.

The Património Cultural listing shows a 09:30–17:00 period, but the municipal announcement does not say whether this covers one tour or several sessions. Meeting point, duration, capacity and price are Being updated. Confirm them with the Tourist Office before travelling.

How to use the nine-museum route

The route will be available in Portuguese, English and Spanish and is designed for one day or a full weekend. Its museums cover different aspects of local history, including Jewish heritage, archaeology and military history.

Plan each venue before travelling. The permanent Megalithism exhibition at Póvoa e Meadas Museum is available only by advance booking, for groups of at least 10 people, arranged through the Tourist Office or [email protected]. Casa da Cidadania Salgueiro Maia remains temporarily closed because of renovation work at the castle. Check the opening times and accessibility of the other museums.

Planning a cultural weekend

Casa da Rua Nova is in the Jewish Quarter beside Fonte da Vila, so a route through the historic centre can begin on foot. After the organised visit, avoid repetition by choosing museums that were not included in the guided itinerary.

The project plans one activity at each museum through mid-May 2027. That programme is still Being updated, so check municipal channels when planning a visit after September.
